Farmer Voices: Real Talk on Tech & Trust in the Supply Chain

2025 Bushel Buddy Seat Conference: Farmer Panel

At the 2025 Bushel Buddy Seat Conference, three farmers shared their perspectives, current challenges, and their favorite technologies used to create efficiencies for their farms.

From Soaked Fields to Parched Ground: A Tale of Two Americas in Spring 2025

Over the past 60 days (April 18 to June 16), weather across the U.S. has been wildly uneven. While some regions saw soaking rains that helped ease drought, others remained stubbornly dry — a mixed bag for farmers across the country.

    Soaked Regions: Rain Brings Relief

Central to Northeast: A wide band from Texas through the Midwest to the Northeast received above-normal rainfall, improving drought conditions and replenishing soil moisture.

    • Southern Plains: Oklahoma and northern Texas saw especially heavy rains in late April and May, boosting outlooks for crops and pastureland.
    • Southeast: Rainfall in May eased drought in states like Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, helping growers rebound from a dry start.
    • Northeast: May’s rainfall removed nearly all drought, just in time for early planting season.
    • Desert Southwest: Arizona experienced a rare wet spell in early June thanks to Tropical Storm Alvin, improving short-term conditions.

    Dry Zones Persist

    • Upper Midwest: Rainfall was limited, causing drought to expand in some areas — a concern for row crops.
    • Western U.S. & Hawaii: Much of the West, including southern California, saw below-normal precipitation, while drought worsened in parts of Hawaii.

    The Big Picture

Overall, drought coverage across the U.S. has decreased, but conditions remain highly variable. While many farmers benefited from spring rains, others still face challenges from dry soils and low water supplies.
